    My question is I don't understand why you are not working to a set of approved plans as yet, you are making things that should be straightforward a lot harder than they should be. I mean taking the foundations, one reason they are certain depths is so they 'work blocks' and you can get up to damp without cutting loads of blocks. Then with the steel columns you are talking about thermal impacts, well that's why people do a set of plans before they start building! Had you got plans done at the outset it would have been apparent the Southern end needed substantial work, then you could have planned for the spoil better. The point is all these situations have knock on effects, seems a really stressful way to build to me.

    Im making a timberframe. Im also milling my timbers. Since its all green wood, what should be done about bugs that have gotten into the wood? It takes about 149° f to kill the bugs. Except by heating the wood its no longer easy to work with.

    Does that frame sit on the 18mm OSB on the roofing joists or does it sit directly on the joists and firring strips before it’s all gets OSB?

    Hi there. Thanks for the video - I do enjoy them and they are spot on for me as a DIYer. I am very interested at section 4:49 of the video. The door is half way up the wall, does this go to your house from the hall. I am wanting to do something similar where I can get access to the brick garage to be able to use it as a utility room.

    Hi Tim, you might want to drop in a 100mm pipe to where you want the wood burner for external air supply. If you want a woodburner/stove in the Kitchen like the Charlton and Jenrick Bakechef, that also would want a 100mm air feed. If they are backing onto external walls then ignore the above but if internal you might want to put them in below the slab now.

    Inspired I'm building a 6x4.5m equivalent of this. Getting professionals to do the timber frame but doing the rest DIY. One thing I can't work out despite watching all vids many times is you seem to start your panels flush with the 25mm battern at chicken end so did you have a 25mm gap at the house end where the 6x1m panels join your ~5.25x1m side panels? Was it just a case of foaming that?

    Not trying to upset you, but this is not really pushing the definition of a class Q conversion so you can understand the councils concerns 😀

      @09conrado 5 днів тому

      Sorry but these rules are ridiculous in the case of a 1980s barn. Understandable in the case of a more monumental building though

    • @peterwalton1502

      @@09conrado I agree but my point is that class Q conversions should be easier to gain approval for. This conversion seems to pushing the boundaries of class Q. That’s why I think it has been so hard. Love the video & the channel

    Probably a bit late for you now, but we used Foamglas blocks as fractionally cheaper than Thermoblocks. Based in Bath if you wanted to come and look. But as an alternative, stick 25-50mm XPS/EPS insulation either side of your trenchblocks and that will give you the same or better if you can tie the insulation into your slab insulation. Remember thermal bridge details is about stopping the thermal short-cuts with structural elements, not necassirly cutting it completely.

  • @johnmit
    @johnmit 6 днів тому

    You've probably already made the decision and ordered them, but we used Foamglas blocks as a slightly cheaper alternative to Thermalblocks for the thermal bridge. But, if you have the height, a single row of 215mm tall thermalite trenching block in a 25mm EPS/XPS sandwich should give you approx the same thermal break as a 65mm row of thermalblock. So you might find it much cheaper and get a better thermal break if you trench block all the way, and then pack 25-50mm insulation sheets either side and tie in with the rest of your insulation?

    Hey. We are looking to paint the woodwork dark green and the walls a light grey. How would you go about this? Do skirting first and overspray into walls? Then mask skirting once dry and go over the overspray? Would it cover? Or is there a way to do walls first and then woodwork as to me it would make more sense to go lighter then darker? But how would I mask up the walls without it damaging the walls after? Even with the masking tape for new paint I find it risky? Any tips? Also how many coats of spray would you say a wall and woodwork takes? And does it take longer in between coats? Sorry so many questions.
